All American Road Trip {Part 1: The Beginning}

14 days, 13 states, 2 girls, 1 truck.

On August 10th I flew in to YEG, met up with my girlfriend, Ashley, and embarked on what I have dubbed our All American Road Trip. In total we drove 11,400+ kilometres, covering a total of 13 states (12 plus DC to be precise). It was an exhilarating, awe-inspiring, and, admittedly, exhausting experience that I wouldn't change one second of... though on my next road trip I will bring a GPS!

Without further ado, from the fumaroles of Yellowstone National Park, to the streets of Salem, Massachusetts, I share with you the beautiful sights we encountered while exploring our neighbour to the south.

Ashley and I left Canada with two packed suitcases, an empty suitcase for purchases we would make along the way, and a tent. We crossed the border between Saskatchewan and North Dakota, and drove east for two days.

Stopping in Jamestown, North Dakota, we tracked down the World's Largest Buffalo... and it was very large. Commissioned in 1959,  Dakota Thunder (as the sculpture was named in 2010) is 26 feet tall, 46 feet long, and weighs 60 tons. We also visited Madison, Wisconsin (one of only two American cities built on an isthmus!), where we saw the State Capitol building, designed by architect George Browne Post.

We had hoped to get into Chicago in the late afternoon of Day 2, but we got stuck in an hours-long, turn-the-engine-off traffic jam on the interstate due to a traffic accident. We ended up stopping at a motel just outside the Windy City, in Lake Bluff, Illinois, for the night, though we did drive in to Chicago for dinner.
